Handmade Mobile Phone Crossbody Disney bagWhatabout ye folks, it's Lee here. My niece, sister and her partner are heading away to Disneyland Paris. And I wanted to make the 2 wee ladies something that they could carry their phones in and a few bits and pieces but that wouldn't be cumbersome for them to carry around with them. So, I made these cute wee crossbody bags. I followed a pattern and tutorial from Owl be Sewing on YouTube. This is such a great wee pattern and could be used for any occasion but is perfect for trips away or festivals, as it's basically a purse and mobile phone holder in one. And it is such an incredibly fast make and I made them using Disney fat Quarter bundles that I had so they are incredibly economical on fabric. You could easily make these bags using scrap fabric. Plus, the bonus is that it is a completely free pattern too. Gina does such a fabulous job, walking you through the pattern with a step by step tutorial on her channel. I highly recommend that you check it out. As always, a shopping list is at the end of my post, in case you want to purchase the same items that I used.
These little crossbody bags are essentially, purses/wallets with a mobile phone pocket on the front and adjustable straps that can be worn across your body for added security. I wanted to make them something that wasn't bulky and heavy to wear but would be secure for their important belongings, like their phones, credit cards, Disney passes, money etc. And hopefully there's enough room to keep some diabetes related items in too, as both my niece and sister are type 1 Diabetic.
I love using these wee popper snaps on my projects. I'd add them to everything if I could. They are so easy to install and work so great. This wee front pocket is perfect for storing your mobile phone safely. I decided to purchase some personalised faux leather tags for myself, details in the shopping list. I did blur out my surname in the photos though, this isn't a design flaw, lol.
On one side of the bag, there is a zip section that has space for money and credit cards. It can hold so many cards, its fantastic.Look how fabulous this rainbow gradient zip is. I just love it. I bought it in a big 5 yard roll from Temu. Have you bought anything from Temu yet? I know that they've blown up recently and everyone and their Grandmother's are doing Temu hauls on YouTube. I purchased from them for the first time recently and I was so impressed with how fast everything arrived and the prices are crazy too. I even missed out on a 30% off coupon, so I actually messaged their Customer Services Team and they immediately got back to me and gave me the discount instantly! I couldn't believe it. I was just being cheeky and asked if they could give me the discount, and they did! I am not affiliated with them at all. I was just so impressed with their Customer Service and how fast everything arrived with me. I've had stuff within the Northern Ireland postal service that has taken longer to get to me, lol.
Unfortunately, I didn't have enough of my black webbing to make the adjustable straps. So I used this brown one instead. But I don't think it makes a difference. Look how cute the wee Micky Mouse zip pulls are! These are from Temu too. So super cute and I think it's a lovely wee finishing touch to the zipper pouches.
The only thing that I would do differently in this pattern is at the zipper insertion section. Because the zipper tape goes edge to edge, it causes a lot of bulk at those sections when sewing and turning the bag right sides out. This bugged me a wee bit. So, to cut down on the bulk, in future I will add little tabs of cotton fabric onto either end of the zippers. That way, the zips have thinner, less bulky material at either ends and this will make it so much easier for sewing and turning out. These zips still work perfectly well, but adding zipper tabs will certainly make sewing the zips in and turning them out so much easier and the air in my craft room won't be as blue with all my profanity and shouting, teehee.
For the credit card slot section, I did use an iron-on heavy weight non woven interfacing, just to give the card slots some rigidity and structure. I did leave it out of the seam allowances though, as it would have been too bulky.
And that's these wee bags completed. Ready for their adventures at Disneyland, Paris. The adjustable straps will mean that they can just throw these over their shoulders and forget about them. They'll have everything they need but not have to worry about having to hike a bag or backpack up over their shoulders constantly. They'll be hands free and ready to fling their arms in the air on the rollercoasters, teehee.
And that's it from me folks. I hope wherever you are, you are having a nicer Summer than we are, lol. Summer is almost over here in Northern Ireland and to be honest, it never really arrived to begin with. The joys of having the jet stream stuck way South below us all Summer......ugh!!!! I'll be back again soon with goodness knows what. Bye for now!
